In a world that rewards speed, patience feels like a lost art. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned from working with visionary founders building land projects, communities, retreat centers and new lives, it’s this: patience and clarity come first.
Most people rush into their dreams. They buy land, start designing, building, and assume that moving quickly will get them to success faster. But the smartest founders I’ve worked with know better. They take their time in pre-development.
One of my clients came to me eager to launch his dream wellness center and neighborhood—a huge vision with high stakes. But instead of plowing forward, he did something rare: he pressed pause. He took the time to truly refine his vision for his life, and then his vision for his land project. He built the right team, and secured funding from people that aligned with his values before starting.
The result? Instead of chasing investors or scrambling to keep up with a too-big project, he’s now stepping into a fully funded, sustainable plan with financial stability and peace of mind. No burnout, no rushed decisions—just smart, intentional growth.
Why Do So Many People Get This Wrong?
I get it. I’ve been there myself. Years ago, I launched a land project in Costa Rica, fueled by passion and an unstoppable drive. We had the vision, the commitment, the dream. But we underestimated everything—time, permitting, costs, and complexity.
We thought bigger was better. More was necessary. That momentum meant success.
But here’s what I’ve learned: More does not mean better. And momentum without alignment leads to disaster.
The Framework for Moving Slow—and Winning Big
After nearly two decades of working with land stewards, community builders, leaders, and entrepreneurs designing their “life 2.0,” I’ve found that the most successful projects follow a simple framework:
✅ Clarify Your Vision – What are you truly building? What is the deeper purpose? If you can’t explain it in a sentence, you need to refine it further.
✅ Start Small and Stay Lean – Many projects fail because they start too big. Focus on what actually matters, and allow room for organic growth.
✅ Build the Right Team – Surround yourself with aligned experts who challenge you, keep you accountable, and offer insight you may not have.
✅ Secure Aligned Funding – Not all money is good money. Values-driven investment keeps your vision intact and prevents future conflicts.
✅ Create a Strategy and Follow it – The most successful projects create a strategy that aligns to their vision, and then follow it meticulously - slow and steady.
What This Looks Like in Action
Recently, a client was about to break ground on his dream home in Costa Rica. But something felt off. He had the funding, the land, and the architect—but his gut was telling him to slow down.
We dug deeper. And what we found changed everything: He wasn’t actually building a home to vacation in twice a year. He was trying to escape something. His deeper vision wasn’t about owning a house—it was about creating a space for transformation. A space for himself and his closest friends to to connect to himself, slow down, and refuel in this fast paced world.
So he stopped. He listened. And he let clarity emerge.
Now? He’s reimagining the project from the ground up in a way that actually aligns with his life vision—not just an impulsive dream.
The Lesson Here?
Patience isn’t about delay. It’s about discernment.
It’s about knowing when to act and when to pause. When to push and when to listen. When to build and when to refine.
